Troubleshooting

Common problems

"claude: not found" / "codex: not found"

Ropenode launches whatever claude or codex is on your PATH. Check the one you are using works in PowerShell first:

claude --version
codex --version

If claude works there but not in Ropenode, set the path to the binary explicitly in Settings → General. For Codex, use the standalone CLI on your PATH, not the copy bundled inside the Codex desktop app.

A session will not resume

Ropenode only resumes a session when the CLI's transcript for it still exists on disk. If the transcript is gone — usually because a previous run was killed before the CLI flushed — it deliberately starts a clean session rather than silently opening a new conversation that pretends to be the old one.

Claude transcripts live under ~\.claude\projects\.

The edit policy did not stop something

Check which agent the session runs. A Codex session is not covered by the edit policy at all — it has no approval channel to enforce it through. See What is supervised. On a Claude Code session, check whether the change came from a shell command — the shell is covered on a best-effort basis, see Shell commands. Otherwise it is a bug worth reporting.

The live Log is empty, but the agent is clearly working

The live view is fed by hooks, which are relayed through Node. If node is not on your PATH — and, in a WSL project, inside the distro as well — tool calls still run and are still recorded in the transcript, but they will not appear live. Install Node.

A Codex session never has a Log; that is expected.

The agent cannot see my MCP servers (WSL)

It is running as the wrong distro user. See WSL sudo.

SmartScreen blocks the installer

The installer is not yet code-signed. In "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway. If the browser stopped the download first ("isn't commonly downloaded"), choose Keep (in Edge: ⋯ → Keep → Show more → Keep anyway).

Ropenode says I am on Free, but I have a licence

It has not been able to confirm the licence for more than 72 hours. The licence tab says so in those words, including how long it has been — it never downgrades you silently. Reconnect and it re-confirms by itself.

If you are online and it still says Free, check you have not used every device seat: see Devices, working offline, and lapsing.

I ran out of device seats

Deactivate the machine you no longer use from your Licences page; the seat frees immediately. Reinstalling Windows or swapping hardware can make one machine look like two.

An agent will not start

On Free, the refusal names the limit you met:

  • "Free works with 3 projects at a time" — this project is not among the three at the front. Close a project tab you are not using and it starts straight away.
  • "Free runs 3 sessions at once" — stop a running session, or close its console.
  • "Free holds 3 projects" — you are adding a fourth; archive one first.

Nothing is hidden or deleted in any of these cases. See What is free and what is paid.
